HOBO Weather Station Data Logger Used in Columbia Amazon Rainforest
Dr. Yadvinder Malhi, from the University of Oxford Department of Geography, is doing research in the Amazon Rain Forest. Below is a letter expressing his thoughts on the performance of the HOBO Weather Station Data Logger. I must say that I was delighted in how easy the station was to set up and get going, and how well documented and well-planned the manual was. I have been installing weather stations in various sites across Amazonia for almost a decade. I had had no time for a test installation in the UK prior to departure so there was always the risk that it wouldn't work or something would be missing when I got to the field. The weather station will be operated by two Colombian students and I had very little time to train them - hence it was extremely useful that the equipment was easy to set up and the manual and software very straightforward to use. It was also nice that every little component (such as the "putty" to fill the hole for the cables) had been thought of and included. I attach a photo of the station. It was installed in a village of Ticuna Indians called Palmeras, on the banks of the Amazon river. The local community took great interest in the station and the students will give some lessons on what the weather data means to the village school. If there was one disappointment it was that the temperature sensor had a resolution that was a bit too low - it would be good to improve this in future models if possible.
