Overview of the HOBO U23-001A Temperature & Humidity Data Logger
The Onset HOBO U23-001A Pro v2 is a weatherproof temperature and humidity data logger that is ideal for condensing moisture environments. The logger utilizes internal sensors which help keep it small for use in tight spaces. The Pro v2 series loggers feature a relative humidity sensor that can quickly recover from condensing conditions which maximizes overall data accuracy. The logger can monitor and record temperature from -40°C to +70°C (-40°F to +158°F) and humidity from 0 to 100% RH. The U23-001A features a user replaceable battery and has a typical battery life of up to 3 years. The logger requires either an optical USB interface (BASE-U-4) or waterproof shuttle (U-DTW-1), both sold separately and utilizes either HOBOware (free download) or HOBOware Pro software.

Is this sensor appropriate to measure SOIL (10 cm. deep) temperature and humidity? I mean, can it be buried for extended periods?
While the logger is enclosed in a protective case it's really not designed for measuring soil conditions. Technically it would probably work but I think the rH sensor would quickly get fouled with particulate which would at best cause inaccurate...
